Although I learned makeup from Makeup School, I can say that yes you can learn by yourself via Youtube or read from beauty bloggers, Pinterest, etc. Makeup Artist profession is more an art job. Art doesn’t need to be specific, the more creative it is the more artistic it is. Learning in academic school you will get the bigger picture, structurally. For example: they teach you about color wheels, type of faces, types of skin, products, hygienic, etc - which you can easily get it online too! Even though I have learned from school, it wont never be enough. We have to upgrade ourselves and keep learning from the market trend.
